Masatsugu Nakashima is a teacher at Municipal Kumanishi Elementary
School in Kitakyushu.
A graduate of Fukuoka University of Education. Mr. Nakashima's
speciality is inorganic chemistry.
As we draw close to the start of a new millennium, environmental
issues are attracting increasing scrutiny throughout the world.
Problems include global warming due to rising levels of carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere; depletion of the ozone layer by CFCs;
and acid rain arising from the increasing quantities of airborne
nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides emitted from vehicles and factories.
I have long been extremely concerned about the worsening pollution
of the earth's water and air. In this demonstration experiment,
I tried to reproduce the process by which acid rain is produced.
The simplicity of the experiment makes the problem accessible
to children as well as adults. I hope that this effort contributes
to raising children's awareness, so that by starting with a sense
of wonder at the phenomenon of acid rain they can develop a serious
desire to tackle the pressing environmental issues we face today.
