| In discussing the phenomenon of the aurora, we could easily emphasize the beauty and mystery of this astronomical marvel. In fact, the aurora illustrates principles of magnetism that is surprisingly widespread in the world around us-principles used in televisions and power generators. Armed with that perspective, I remember looking with new eyes at many familiar electrical appliances, and my wonder at the way the same principles on which these devices function govern some of the most majestic events in space. I hope viewers of this site will also think about the aurora in terms of the laws of electromagnetism. |
